Hearthstone welcomes Winter Veil 2018

This year’s Winter Veil brings with it a number of things players can be excited about.

It’s the holiday season in the real world, which means our favorite games are ushering in their holiday-themed events. For Hearthstone players, this means it’s time to participate in the Feast of Winter Veil.

This year’s Winter Veil brings with it a number of things players can be excited about. The first thing you’ll see when logging on is a quest called “Happy Winter Veil.” This quest requires you to play 100 cards in Play mode, and then rewards you with four card packs from The Boomsday Project expansion. Your hero will now also wish your opponent a happy Winter Veil if you use the greeting emote.

Players will also find a new limited-time bundle available for purchase in the Hearthstone store. The Winter Veil Wonder Bundle costs $19.99 and includes 30 packs. The packs are broken up in groups of six by expansion. You’ll get packs from The Boomsday Project, The Witchwood, Kobolds and Catacombs, Knights of the Frozen Throne, and Journey to Un’Goro.

Keep in mind, many of these sets rotate out early next year. When the first expansion of 2019 goes live, Journey to Un’goro, Knights of the Frozen Throne, and Kobolds and Catacombs will no longer be allowed in standard format. If you’re looking for cheap dust or are feeling particularly lucky, the bundle may still be worth the buy.

The main course of this year’s Winter Veil seems to be its new Tavern Brawl, Returns and Exchanges. The new brawl will have players choose their hero, then build a deck of 20 minions. Ten random spell cards will be added to the decks built for a total of 30 cards. At the start of the match, each player will mulligan for their opening hand. After this, the player gifts the rest of their deck to their opponent.

During the brawl, each player only has 20 life instead of the usual 30. Each deck also comes with a five-mana cost Gift Receipt card. When the Gift Receipt card is played, it refreshes a player’s mana crystals, and then swaps decks again while destroying their opponent’s Gift Receipt. You’ll probably want to play the Gift Receipt as soon as possible, so you get the value out of it instead of your opponent.

When building your initial deck for this brawl, you’ll want to think about what cards you’ll be trying to get in mulligan. This game type puts deck building in a weird place thanks to its chaotic randomness. On one hand, you don’t want to build a deck with too many amazing minions because you’ll eventually be swapping decks with your opponent. On the other hand, you don’t want to build a deck full of trash minions because you’ll be in a tough spot when you get your deck back after the Gift Receipt comes into play.

Think about including minions that generate card draw that you could play early. For example, Acolyte of Pain would be a great inclusion for any class since it’s a low-cost neutral card that generates card draw. Since this brawl type is so random, try to focus on having fun with it instead of taking it very seriously.

You’ll definitely want to spam Tavern Brawl until you get a win, however, because doing so will result in earning a new card back. The new card back is called Winter Veil Treat and it looks like a delicious holiday snack. The flavor text for the card back reads “every deck should have 30 cards, *crunch crunch crunch*, but 29 is fine.”
